The airport was officially and permanently closed on February 10, 2017. The closure was formalized by the Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) through ordinance Portaria Nº 335/SIA.
The closure was executed at the formal request of the airfield's owner, the Municipality of Francisco Sá. The underlying reasons were primarily economic and strategic land use. The municipality intended to repurpose the land for urban development, citing plans for a new industrial district and, later, a large housing project. The low volume of air traffic likely made the cost of maintaining the airfield to regulatory standards unsustainable compared to the benefits of redeveloping the land.
The airport is defunct and the site has been completely repurposed. Following its closure, the municipal government designated the land for development. As of 2021, the area was allocated for the construction of a new housing project ('conjunto habitacional') for 500 families, a project developed in partnership with the state housing company, COHAB Minas. Satellite imagery confirms the runway is no longer maintained, is overgrown with vegetation, and the site is being prepared for or is undergoing redevelopment.
Francisco Sá Airport, officially known by its ICAO code SNFS (the code BR-2073 is a non-standard identifier used in some unofficial databases), was a public airfield (aeródromo público) with an unpaved runway. It did not handle scheduled commercial airline services. Its primary role was to support general aviation, including private aircraft, air taxis, and agricultural aviation. The airport was a piece of essential infrastructure for the region, providing vital connectivity for business, emergency medical flights (aeromedical transport), and government operations in a relatively remote part of the state of Minas Gerais.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The official de-registration from ANAC, combined with the municipality's concrete plans to use the land for housing and industrial development, indicates a permanent closure. The land has been re-zoned for urban use, making a return to aviation activities highly improbable.
