The airport was effectively closed to traffic around 2015 when it was interdicted by Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC). Its registration was officially and permanently cancelled by ANAC via ordinance Nº 2453/SIA on August 22, 2017, following a request from the municipal operator.
The closure was due to economic and safety reasons. The airport failed to meet the minimum operational and safety standards required by ANAC. Specific issues included a lack of investment in maintenance, a deteriorated and unpaved runway, and the absence of proper fencing, which led to the frequent presence of people and animals on the airstrip, posing a severe safety risk. The local municipality, which operated the airport, was unable to fund the necessary upgrades, leading to its interdiction and eventual official closure.
The airport is abandoned and derelict. Satellite imagery of the coordinates confirms the existence of a visible but completely unmaintained dirt runway that is overgrown with vegetation. The site has no operational infrastructure and is not used for any aviation activities. The land remains an unused, abandoned airstrip.
Calçoene Airport, officially Aeródromo de Calçoene (former ICAO: SBCN), was a vital public aerodrome for the remote municipality of Calçoene in the state of Amapá. Its primary role was to provide essential air connectivity for a region with limited road access. The airport handled general aviation aircraft, air taxi services, and critical government flights, including medical evacuations and the transport of supplies. It was a crucial piece of infrastructure for regional integration, social support, and economic activity, connecting the isolated community to the state capital, Macapá, and other locations.
Uncertain, with no active plans. While regional and federal politicians have occasionally discussed the possibility of renovating and reopening small airports in the Amazon, including Calçoene, to improve logistics and support tourism (notably to the nearby Calçoene Megalithic Observatory), there are no concrete, funded projects or official timelines for its reconstruction. The significant cost required to bring the aerodrome up to modern safety standards remains a major barrier.
