Circa June 2017
The airport was closed because it was replaced by a new, larger, and more modern airport. The old airstrip (BR-2056) was a very basic, unpaved runway that was inadequate for the region's rapidly growing tourism demands. To boost economic development and provide reliable access for major airlines, the new Jericoacoara Regional Airport (IATA: JJD, ICAO: SBJE) was constructed in the nearby municipality of Cruz. The opening of the new airport on June 24, 2017, rendered the old airstrip obsolete.
The site is abandoned and no longer in use for aviation. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows the faint outline of the former runway, but it is overgrown with vegetation and unmaintained. The land has not been repurposed for any other significant development and is largely returning to its natural state.
BR-2056 was a small, rudimentary airstrip that served as the primary air access point to the remote village of Jericoacoara for many years. It was crucial for the initial growth of tourism in the area, which was otherwise only accessible via long, unpaved sand tracks. The airport handled only small, light aircraft, such as Cessna Caravans, operating as air taxis and private charters. It was an unpaved sand/dirt runway with minimal to no infrastructure, operating under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) only during daylight hours. Its existence was vital for establishing Jericoacoara as a world-renowned destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening this airport. It was permanently and intentionally replaced by the Jericoacoara Regional Airport (JJD/SBJE), a modern facility capable of handling large commercial jets like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. The new airport fully serves the region's needs, making the old, primitive airstrip redundant and economically unviable to operate or maintain.
