The airport ceased operations gradually between approximately 2013 and 2018. It was definitively decommissioned around 2018, a period that coincides with the inauguration of a new public airport in the city and the expansion of the industrial plant on the site.
The closure was the result of several converging factors:
1. **Corporate Acquisition:** The airport's owner and operator, Frigorífico Santa Maria S/A (Frisama), was acquired by the multinational company JBS in 2013. This change in ownership likely led to new logistical strategies that no longer required a private airstrip.
2. **Redundancy:** The city of Açailândia inaugurated a new, modern public airport, Aeroporto Regional de Açailândia (ICAO: SJZX), in 2018. This new facility made the small, private Frisama strip obsolete for any potential charter or executive travel.
3. **Industrial Expansion:** The valuable land occupied by the runway was needed for the expansion of the JBS meatpacking plant. Satellite imagery from the late 2010s onwards shows the runway being systematically built over for new industrial buildings, storage yards, and access roads.
The airport is permanently closed and has been completely redeveloped. The site of the former runway is now an integral part of the sprawling JBS industrial complex. The land is occupied by large industrial buildings, vehicle parking lots, equipment storage areas, and internal plant roadways. No remnants of the runway are visible or usable for aviation purposes.
Frisama Açailândia Airport was a private aerodrome with a single unpaved runway (approximately 1200 meters). Its significance was entirely logistical and tied to the Frigorífico Santa Maria, one of the most important industrial and economic drivers in Açailândia. When active, the airport exclusively handled private operations for the company. This included transporting executives, engineers, and important clients to and from the remote plant, as well as facilitating the urgent shipment of critical parts or documents. It operated as a key piece of private infrastructure, supporting a major local industry in an era before the region had a dedicated public airport.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening this airport. The land has been irreversibly repurposed and built upon. The aviation needs of the city of Açailândia and the surrounding region are now fully served by the public Aeroporto Regional de Açailândia (ICAO: SJZX), making the revival of the former private strip both unnecessary and impossible.
