The exact closure date is not officially documented. Analysis of historical satellite imagery suggests a gradual decline in use. The airstrip appeared active and maintained through the early 2010s but shows signs of neglect and overgrowth by the mid-to-late 2010s. It was likely fully abandoned as an active airfield sometime between 2015 and 2020.
The airport was a private airstrip serving the Fazenda Ourissanga (Ourissanga Farm). Its closure was not due to a single event like an accident or military conversion. The most probable reason is economic and operational changes at the farm it served. This could include the owner no longer operating an aircraft, a change in the farm's logistical needs, or the cost of maintenance outweighing the benefits, leading to its gradual abandonment.
As of the early 2020s, the site is no longer a functional airport. The physical runway is still visible in satellite imagery as a dirt/grass strip cutting through surrounding sugarcane fields. However, it is unmaintained, significantly overgrown, and shows no signs of recent aviation use. The path of the former runway appears to be used occasionally by farm vehicles as an access track.
The airport, also known by the more standard ICAO code SJOU, had no major public or historical significance. Its role was entirely private, serving as a key piece of infrastructure for the large agricultural estate, Fazenda Ourissanga. Operations were limited to general aviation and would have included: transporting the farm's owners, managers, and visitors; flying in urgent supplies and spare parts for machinery; and potentially supporting agricultural aviation activities like crop dusting. It was a utility airstrip designed to improve the efficiency and accessibility of a remote agricultural operation.
There are no known official plans or prospects for reopening the airport. As a private facility, any initiative to restore and reopen it would have to come from the current landowner. Given the apparent lack of need that led to its closure and the significant cost of restoring and certifying an airfield, the prospect of it reopening is considered extremely low.
