Circa 2010-2012. The airport's closure was a gradual process, but it was definitively rendered non-operational by 2012 when large structures for public events, such as the 'Templo do Rock' stage for a music festival, were constructed directly on the runway.
The primary reason for the closure was urban development and the strategic redevelopment of the valuable coastal land. A significant portion of the airport grounds was expropriated by the municipality for the construction of the Centro de Desenvolvimento de Voleibol (CDV), the national training center for the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation. The remaining area was repurposed for public use, driven by real estate pressure and the city's need for a large, central event space.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is no longer recognizable as an airport, although the faint outline of the runway can still be seen on satellite imagery. The land is now used for:
- **Centro de Desenvolvimento de Voleibol (CDV):** A world-class training facility for Brazil's national volleyball teams, which occupies a large part of the northern section of the former airport.
- **Public Park and Event Venue:** The area of the former runway and aprons has been converted into a large public square and event space. It hosts major concerts, festivals, and civic events for the city of Saquarema.
- **Urban Infrastructure:** New roads and city infrastructure have been built across the property, fully integrating it into the urban fabric of the BoqueirĂŁo neighborhood.
When active, Saquarema Airport (formerly ICAO: SDSA) was a vital hub for general and sport aviation. It was home to the 'Aeroclube de Saquarema' and played a significant role in the local economy. Its main operations included:
- **General Aviation:** Served private pilots and small charter/air taxi flights, providing access for tourists and business visitors.
- **Skydiving (Paraquedismo):** It was a major center for skydiving in the region, attracting enthusiasts and tourists, which significantly contributed to Saquarema's reputation as an adventure sports destination.
- **Flight Training:** The aeroclub provided flight instruction for aspiring pilots.
The airport never handled large commercial scheduled flights but was crucial for supporting tourism, particularly related to the city's famous surfing and sporting culture.
There are no plans or prospects to reopen the airport at its original location. The land has been permanently and irreversibly re-purposed. While there have been sporadic discussions and proposals by local politicians and business groups over the years to build a new aerodrome in a different, more suitable location outside the city center to once again support tourism and general aviation, no concrete or funded project has been officially announced or initiated. Therefore, the prospect of a new Saquarema airport remains speculative.
