The airport ceased operations in late 2006 and was permanently closed in early 2007. Demolition and construction on the site began shortly thereafter.
The closure was driven by economic factors, specifically intense real estate pressure and rapid urban expansion. The land, located in the valuable and fast-growing Recreio dos Bandeirantes neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro's West Zone, became far more profitable for residential development than for aviation. The property was sold to real estate developers for the construction of large condominium complexes.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is unrecognizable as an airfield. It is now occupied by several large, upscale residential condominium complexes, including 'Barra Village Lakes' and 'Barra Village Prime'. The former runway and hangar areas are now covered by apartment buildings, swimming pools, internal roads, and landscaping. There are no physical remnants of the airport.
Clube do Céu (Portuguese for 'Club of the Sky') was a significant and beloved private airfield for general aviation, ultralight aircraft, and recreational flying. It served as a primary hub for flight schools, private aircraft owners, and aviation enthusiasts in the region. For decades, it fostered a strong community of pilots and was known for its more relaxed, club-like atmosphere compared to the busier, more formal Jacarepaguá Airport (SBJR) located nearby. It played a vital role in sport aviation and pilot training in Rio de Janeiro.
None. The prospect of reopening is zero. The land has been fully and permanently converted to high-density residential use, making any return to aviation activities physically, legally, and economically impossible.
