Shortly after February 11, 2019
The heliport was permanently closed by its owner, Grupo Bandeirantes, following the tragic helicopter crash on February 11, 2019, that killed the network's prominent journalist, Ricardo Boechat, and the pilot, Ronaldo Quattrucci. Although the crash occurred elsewhere (on the Rodoanel Mário Covas highway), the helicopter was en route to the Bandeirantes heliport to drop off the journalist. As a direct consequence of this tragedy, the company made the decision to decommission the facility.
The site of the former heliport is the rooftop of the Grupo Bandeirantes building in the Morumbi district of São Paulo. While the physical landing pad structure still exists, it is permanently decommissioned and is no longer registered or used for any aviation activities. It is simply an inactive part of the building's structure.
Officially known as Bandeirantes Heliport (ICAO: SJBJ), it was a private heliport located on the roof of the Grupo Bandeirantes de Comunicação headquarters. Its primary purpose was to support the media network's operations by providing rapid transportation for its main journalists, news anchors (notably Ricardo Boechat), and executives. In a city known for extreme traffic congestion like São Paulo, the heliport was a critical logistical asset for news gathering and ensuring on-air talent could move quickly between assignments and the studio.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. Its closure was a definitive decision tied to a significant tragedy for the company, and it is officially listed as 'Permanently Closed' (FECHADO PERMANENTEMENTE) in the records of Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC).
