Late 2000s, approximately 2008-2009. While an exact official date is not readily available, aviation community discussions and historical satellite imagery confirm that the airport ceased operations and construction on the new development began during this period.
Economic reasons driven by real estate development. The land occupied by the airport was sold and redeveloped into a high-value, luxury gated residential community. The value of the land for real estate far surpassed its value as a general aviation airfield, a common fate for smaller airports located near expanding urban centers.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is now the location of a luxury gated community called 'Condomínio Porta do Sol'. The former runway's path has been paved and repurposed as the main road of the condominium, named 'Alameda dos Eucaliptos'. No remnants of the original airport infrastructure, such as hangars or a terminal, remain. The entire area is now occupied by private homes and residential lots.
Sao Roque Airport, also known locally as 'Aeródromo de Ibaté', was a private airfield that served the general aviation community. It featured a single unpaved/grass runway (approximately 1000 meters long) and was a popular destination for private pilots, flying clubs, and aviation enthusiasts from the greater São Paulo area. It primarily handled recreational flights, pilot training, and small private aircraft. Its proximity to São Paulo made it a convenient and scenic spot for weekend flying, and it was a significant hub for the local aviation community before its closure.
Effectively zero. The land has been permanently and fully redeveloped for high-density residential use. Reacquiring the land, demolishing hundreds of luxury homes, and rebuilding an airport is financially, politically, and logistically infeasible. There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport.
