The airport was closed due to urban expansion and the strategic relocation of aviation activities. The city of Recife was growing around the airfield, making it unsuitable for expansion and increasingly unsafe. Concurrently, a new, larger, and more modern airport was being developed further south in the Ibura district, which would become the current Recife/Guararapes–Gilberto Freyre International Airport (SBRF). All civil and military operations were transferred to this superior facility.
The former airport site has been completely redeveloped and is now an integral part of a high-value, densely populated urban area in the Pina neighborhood of Recife. The land is occupied by major commercial and residential developments, including the large 'Shopping RioMar Recife' mall, the 'Empresarial JCPM' business center, and numerous high-rise buildings. There are no physical remnants of the original airport or its runways.
Encanta Moça Airport, more commonly known as 'Campo do Pina' or 'Aeroporto do Pina', was one of Recife's first and most important airfields. Its significance includes:
- **Home of the Aeroclube de Pernambuco:** It was the original base for the state's aeroclub, playing a crucial role in training civilian pilots and fostering private aviation in the region from its founding in the 1930s.
- **Military Base:** The site also housed the 'Base Aeronaval do Pina', a key base for the Brazilian Navy's air arm (Aviação Naval) during that era.
- **Early Airmail Hub:** While seaplanes often used the nearby harbor, the Campo do Pina was integral to the land-based operations of pioneering international airmail services, such as the French company Aéropostale, which connected Europe to South America.
- **Predecessor to SBRF:** It represents the first chapter of organized aviation in Recife before all major operations were consolidated at the current international airport.
*Note: The ICAO code 'BR-1976' is not a standard ICAO format and is likely a non-official identifier from a specific database. The airport predates the modern ICAO code system and did not have an official one.*
There are zero prospects for reopening. The location is now a prime urban real estate area in the heart of a major city. Re-establishing an airport on this site is physically, logistically, and economically impossible. The city of Recife is well-served by the large, modern Recife/Guararapes–Gilberto Freyre International Airport (SBRF).
