Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Circa early 1980s. The airport was officially deactivated to allow for the construction of the Parque Municipal do Chimarrão, which hosted its first major event (Fenachim) in 1986. The local Aeroclube's activities ceased around 1980, marking the effective end of airport operations.

Reason for Closure

Urban expansion and real estate development. As the city of Venâncio Aires grew, the airport became completely surrounded by residential and commercial areas. This made flight operations increasingly hazardous and impractical. The land was considered more valuable for urban development, leading to the decision to close the airport and re-purpose the site.

Current Status

The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped. It is now the location of the 'Parque Municipal do Chimarrão', a large and important city park and event center. This park is famous for hosting the 'Festa Nacional do Chimarrão' (Fenachim), a major national festival celebrating the local culture of chimarrão (a traditional mate-based drink). The surrounding area is a dense urban neighborhood.

Historical Significance

Inaugurated in 1958, the airport was primarily the home of the 'Aeroclube de Venâncio Aires'. It served as a center for general aviation in the region, focusing on pilot training, recreational flying, parachuting, and hosting local airshows. While it was a significant hub for the local aviation community, it did not handle scheduled commercial airline services.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for reopening the original airport, as the site is now a permanent and vital city park. However, there is an active project initiated by local business leaders and aviation enthusiasts to build a new municipal aerodrome for Venâncio Aires at a different, more suitable rural location (a proposed site is in the Linha Olavo Bilac area). This new project aims to support regional agribusiness, executive transport, and air-medical services, but it is still in the planning and feasibility study phase and is not a reopening of the original site.
