The airport was officially closed and its registration canceled by the Brazilian Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) in 2006. It had been operating under restricted conditions for several years prior to the final closure.
The primary reason for the closure was the failure to meet mandatory safety and infrastructure requirements set by ANAC. Specific issues included: 1) Significant urban encroachment, with residential houses and other buildings constructed too close to the runway, creating a major safety risk for both aircraft operations and residents. 2) Lack of adequate security, including proper perimeter fencing. 3) The infrastructure, despite the runway being paved by the municipality in the 1990s, was deemed insufficient and did not comply with modern aviation standards.
The site is currently abandoned and in a state of significant neglect. The paved runway remains visible on satellite imagery but is cracked, weathered, and partially overgrown with vegetation. The former hangars and support buildings are dilapidated. The unsecured area has become a public safety issue for the surrounding neighborhoods, with reports of it being used for illegal car/motorcycle racing and other illicit activities. The land is property of the municipality of Laguna.
Named after the revolutionary heroine Anita Garibaldi, who is a major historical figure from Laguna, the airport was a key general aviation facility for the region. It was never served by major commercial airlines but was crucial for private aviation, air taxis, flight schools (hosting the Aeroclube de Laguna), and tourism. It provided direct air access for visitors to the historic city and popular beaches of Laguna. The airport also played a role in facilitating emergency medical transport flights.
There are no realistic prospects for the airport to reopen. Over the years, local politicians have occasionally proposed its reactivation, but the prohibitive costs of modernization and the complex issue of expropriating surrounding properties to create a safe buffer zone have made these plans unfeasible. As of 2024, the municipality of Laguna is moving forward with a definitive plan to redevelop the site. The project involves officially decommissioning the airport and transforming the land into a multi-purpose 'Innovation, Leisure, and Events Park' (Parque de Inovação, Lazer e Eventos), effectively ending any possibility of its return to aviation use.
