Approximately May 2002. The closure coincided with the inauguration of the new Eunápolis Airport (SNEP/EUN) on May 5, 2002, which replaced this facility.
Replacement by a new facility. The old airport was situated very close to the city center and became engulfed by urban expansion. Its runway was short and its infrastructure was inadequate to handle the growing demand for air travel and larger aircraft, driven by the region's economic and tourism growth. A new, larger, and more modern airport was built at a nearby location to better serve these needs.
The airport site has been completely decommissioned and fully redeveloped. The land has been integrated into the city's urban grid. The former runway area is now occupied by a major road, Avenida Santos Dumont, as well as residential homes and commercial buildings. The site's history is preserved in local street names, such as 'Rua da Pista Velha' (Old Runway Street), which directly references its past as an airfield.
This was the original airport serving Eunápolis and the surrounding region. For decades, it was the primary air connection, handling general aviation and regional commercial flights. It primarily operated with smaller piston and turboprop aircraft, connecting the city to regional hubs like Salvador and Porto Seguro. The airport was instrumental in the early development of local commerce, agriculture, and the burgeoning tourism industry before the city's growth made its location untenable.
There are zero prospects for reopening this airport. The land has been permanently and completely converted to urban use, making a return to aviation operations impossible. All current and future aviation development for the region is focused on the active Eunápolis Airport (SNEP/EUN).
