Dores Do Indaia Airport

The airport was closed due to its replacement by a new, modern facility. The old airfield (BR-1966) had several limitations that prompted its decommissioning:

1. **Inadequate Infrastructure:** It was a very basic airstrip with an unpaved (dirt or grass) runway.
2. **Limited Size:** The runway was short and unsuitable for larger, more modern aircraft.
3. **Urban Encroachment:** Located very close to the city center, the airport was surrounded by urban development. This posed significant safety risks, created noise issues for residents, and made any potential expansion or upgrade impossible.

The new airport (SBDI) was built in a more suitable location, further from the city center, and features a longer, paved runway and better infrastructure, resolving all the issues of the old site.

The site of the former airport has been completely decommissioned and repurposed for urban development. The land has been absorbed into the city's grid. Satellite imagery shows that new streets have been built directly over the former runway, and the area has been subdivided into residential and commercial lots. The physical airfield no longer exists, and the land is now part of the urban landscape of Dores do Indaiá.

The airport, known locally as the old 'campo de aviação' (aviation field), was the primary air access point for the municipality of Dores do Indaiá for many decades. Its significance was entirely local, serving the general aviation community. Operations primarily consisted of:

- **Private Aviation:** Small, privately owned aircraft for business and personal travel.
- **Air Taxi Services:** Connecting Dores do Indaiá with other regional towns and larger cities.
- **Agricultural Aviation:** Supporting the local agricultural economy with crop-dusting and spraying aircraft.
- **Medical and Emergency Transport:** Serving as a vital link for urgent patient transfers.

It did not handle any scheduled commercial flights from major airlines but was a crucial piece of infrastructure for the region's connectivity and economy before being replaced.

There are zero prospects for reopening this airport. The site has been permanently and irreversibly developed for urban use. Furthermore, the city is now adequately served by the new and superior Aeroporto de Dores do Indaiá (SBDI), making the old airfield redundant. Its reopening is neither feasible nor necessary.
