Approximately July 2016. The airport was officially and permanently closed upon the inauguration of its replacement, the new Aeroporto de Brasileia - Villiam Dourado (ICAO: SWBS), on July 1, 2016.
The primary reason for closure was urban encroachment leading to significant safety concerns. The airport was located in the heart of the city, and as Brasileia grew, buildings and residential areas surrounded the runway. This proximity posed a high risk to both aircraft operations and the local population, and it also hindered the city's further expansion. The decision was made to replace it with a modern facility built in a safer, more suitable location outside the main urban area.
The former airport site has been completely redeveloped and integrated into the city's urban landscape. The land where the runway once lay is now occupied by a major avenue named Avenida Rui Lino, public spaces such as the Parque Centenário, an event and exhibition center (Espaço de Eventos da Acisa), as well as numerous commercial and residential buildings. There are no remaining traces of the airport infrastructure on the ground.
For decades, the old Brasileia Airport was a critical infrastructure link for this remote border region in the state of Acre. Before the full paving and improvement of the BR-317 highway, it was the most reliable connection to the state capital, Rio Branco, and the rest of Brazil. The airport, which had an unpaved runway, primarily handled general aviation aircraft, air taxis, and small charter flights. It was essential for transporting passengers, urgent cargo, mail, and was a vital asset for medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) flights. Its central location, while eventually a liability, initially made it a convenient and accessible hub for the community. The ICAO code 'BR-1964' appears to be a non-standard or internal identifier, as official Brazilian ICAO codes typically begin with 'S'.
There are zero prospects for reopening this airport. The land has been permanently and irreversibly repurposed for urban development. All aviation services for Brasileia and the surrounding region are now handled by the new, fully operational Aeroporto de Brasileia - Villiam Dourado (ICAO: SWBS).
