July 23, 2019. The airport ceased all operations on this date, coinciding with the inauguration and start of operations at the new Glauber Rocha Airport (ICAO: SBVC). The last commercial flight departed from Pedro Otacílio Figueiredo Airport on the morning of July 23rd.
The airport was closed due to being replaced by a new, larger, and more modern facility. The primary reasons for its replacement were:
1. **Operational Limitations:** Its runway was only 1,775 meters (5,823 ft) long, which was too short to safely accommodate larger, more modern jet aircraft like the Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A320 at full capacity. This restricted the potential for new routes and larger flights.
2. **Urban Encroachment:** Located within the urban perimeter of Vitória da Conquista, the airport was completely surrounded by residential and commercial neighborhoods. This created significant noise pollution and safety risks, and made any expansion of the runway or facilities impossible.
3. **Outdated Infrastructure:** The passenger terminal and support infrastructure were outdated and insufficient to handle the growing passenger demand in the region.
The airport site is permanently decommissioned for aviation use. The land was handed over to the municipal government of Vitória da Conquista for redevelopment. The area is slated for a major urban renewal project. Current plans include the creation of a large public park ('Parque da Cidade'), a new civic center, as well as residential and commercial zones. While the old runway, taxiways, and terminal building are still physically present, they are inactive and the area is awaiting the full implementation of the urban development project.
Inaugurated in 1939, Pedro Otacílio Figueiredo Airport (Correct ICAO: SBQV, IATA: VDC) was the main air gateway to Vitória da Conquista and the entire southwestern region of Bahia for 80 years. It played a vital role in the economic and social integration of the region, connecting it to major Brazilian cities such as Salvador, São Paulo, and Belo Horizonte. The airport handled regular domestic passenger flights from airlines like Azul Linhas Aéreas and Passaredo Linhas Aéreas (now VoePass), which typically operated regional aircraft like the ATR 72 and Embraer E190/195. In addition to commercial aviation, it was a hub for general aviation, air taxi services, and crucial aeromedical transport.
None. There are absolutely no plans or prospects for reopening the site as an airport. Its closure was definitive as part of a strategic upgrade to the far superior Glauber Rocha Airport. The future of the land is exclusively focused on urban redevelopment to integrate the former airport grounds into the city's landscape.
