Circa November 2013. The airport was officially and permanently closed following the inauguration of the new Feijó Airport (ICAO: SWFE) on November 20, 2013.
Replacement by a new facility. The primary reason for closure was the airport's location within the urban center of Feijó. This central location posed a safety risk to the surrounding population and infrastructure, and its presence physically constrained the town's growth and urban development. A new, larger, and safer airport was constructed outside the city limits to replace it.
The former airport site has been completely redeveloped and integrated into the city's urban fabric. The land was handed over to the municipal government and has been transformed into a residential neighborhood, commonly known as 'Bairro do Aeroporto Velho' (Old Airport Neighborhood). The former runway is now a paved avenue, and the surrounding area is filled with houses, streets, and other city infrastructure. The site is no longer recognizable as an airfield.
For decades, Alcimar Leitão Airport was the essential lifeline for the remote municipality of Feijó in the state of Acre. In a region with historically challenging land transport, the airport provided a vital connection for passenger travel, mail delivery, cargo, and, most critically, medical evacuation (medevac) flights. It primarily handled general aviation and regional air taxi services, with small propeller-driven aircraft capable of operating on its short, unpaved runway. It was a fundamental piece of infrastructure that ensured the community was not isolated from the rest of Brazil.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The site has been permanently and irreversibly converted to urban use. All air traffic and future aviation investments for the region are directed to the modern and operational Feijó Airport (ICAO: SWFE).
