The airport ceased active flight operations between 2018 and 2020. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows a well-maintained and active airfield in 2015, but by 2020 the runway appears unmaintained and overgrown, indicating a cessation of use.
The primary reason for the closure was urban encroachment. The city of Dourados expanded westward, surrounding the airfield. This makes flight operations, especially for low-flying agricultural aircraft, increasingly hazardous and subject to noise complaints. The rising value of the land for commercial or residential development likely made it more profitable to sell or repurpose the property rather than continue aviation operations.
The airport is permanently closed and is not used for any aviation activities. Recent satellite imagery shows that while the physical runway outline is still visible, it is unmaintained, partially covered by vegetation, and unusable. The hangars and adjacent buildings remain on the site but appear to have been repurposed for non-aviation purposes, such as equipment storage or as a commercial yard for a ground-based business.
The airport was the private operational base for the company 'Spessato Aviação Agrícola Ltda'. Its significance was crucial to the local economy of Dourados, a major center for agribusiness in Brazil. For approximately two decades, from the late 1990s to the late 2010s, the airport supported the region's vast farms by providing essential agricultural aviation services, including crop dusting, fertilization, and pest control. It typically handled a fleet of specialized agricultural aircraft, such as the Embraer EMB 202 Ipanema and similar models.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Spessato Aviacao Agricola Airport. Given its location is now well within the urban perimeter of Dourados, reopening is considered infeasible due to safety regulations and real estate pressures. Any future aviation development for the city is focused on the main Dourados Regional Airport (IATA: DOU, ICAO: SBDO), which is better equipped and situated to handle regional air traffic.
