Leda Mello Resende Airport serves Três Pontas, BR.
The Leda Mello Resende Airport (ICAO: SIAB), located in Três Pontas, Brazil, was officially closed by the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) with air traffic ceasing on April 28, 2016. The primary reason for its closure was the proximity of a municipal daycare center, built in 2011, which was located just 50 meters from the runway, posing a safety risk to children and staff.
The airport's runway, measuring 1040 meters (3412 feet), was constructed over 70 years prior to its closure and was revitalized between 2001 and 2004, at which point it was named Leda Mello de Rezende. Despite arguments for its importance to the industrialization of Três Pontas, the airport saw limited activity, with its highest recorded movement being seven takeoffs and landings in 2004, three of which were for the Expocafé event.
Currently, the mayor of Três Pontas has expressed intentions to repurpose the former airport site for cultural and religious events, drawing on the positive experience of using the location for the beatification ceremony of Padre Victor in 2015. The city is also exploring a more suitable location for a new aerodrome that complies with ANAC regulations.
