Approximately November 2001
The airport was closed due to urban encroachment and its replacement by a new, more modern facility. The original airport was located very close to the city center, which restricted its expansion and posed increasing safety risks as the city of Três Pontas grew around it. A new airport, the Três Pontas Airport (ICAO: SBTP), was constructed in a more suitable location outside the main urban area to better serve the region's needs. The closure of Leda Mello Resende Airport coincided with the inauguration of the new airport.
The site of the former airport has been completely decommissioned and redeveloped. The land has been integrated into the urban fabric of Três Pontas. The area of the former runway and facilities is now occupied by residential streets, houses, commercial buildings, and a large public event space known as the 'Parque Multiuso da Mina' (Mina Multipurpose Park). The park hosts concerts, festivals, and other civic events. The original runway is no longer visible or intact.
Leda Mello Resende Airport was the original airfield for Três Pontas, serving as a vital link for general aviation, air taxis, and private aircraft. It supported local business, agriculture, and personal travel for many years. Its operations were typical of a small municipal airport in the interior of Minas Gerais. The ICAO code BR-1940 is a non-standard, national identifier used for smaller aerodromes in Brazil, indicating it was not a major commercial hub but a registered local airfield.
None. There are no plans or prospects for reopening this airport. The site has been permanently and completely repurposed for urban development. The city's aviation needs are now met by the new Três Pontas Airport (SBTP), which has superior infrastructure.
