Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2003-2004. The airport was officially deactivated and the area was abandoned for several years before redevelopment began in the early 2010s.

Reason for Closure

The primary reason for closure was intense urban encroachment and real estate pressure. As the city of Nova Iguaçu expanded rapidly, the airport became surrounded by dense residential and commercial areas. This created significant safety concerns for aircraft operations and made the land extremely valuable for urban development. The Aeroclube was eventually forced to cease operations and sell the land following legal disputes and the overwhelming push for redevelopment.

Current Status

The site has been completely redeveloped and is unrecognizable as a former airport. The land is now occupied by a large commercial and residential complex, the centerpiece of which is the 'Shopping Nova Iguaçu' mall, which opened in 2016. Other structures, including residential towers and commercial stores, also occupy the former airport grounds. All traces of the runway, hangars, and other aviation infrastructure have been permanently removed.

Historical Significance

Founded on May 12, 1941, the Aeroclube de Nova Iguaçu (historically known by ICAO code SBNI) was a vital center for general aviation in the Baixada Fluminense region for over 60 years. It was a key training ground for civilian pilots and, in its early years, for military cadets as part of the national 'Dê Asas ao Brasil' (Give Wings to Brazil) campaign to promote aviation. The airport primarily handled light aircraft operations, including flight instruction (using aircraft like the Paulistinha CAP-4 and Cessnas), parachuting, and recreational flying. It also hosted popular airshows and was an important social and recreational hub for the local community.

Reopening Prospects

Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and completely repurposed for large-scale commercial and residential use, making a return to aviation activities at this location impossible.
