January 29, 2016. The airstrip was officially and permanently removed from the national aviation registry by the Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) through Ordinance NÂş 253/SIA.
The closure was executed at the formal request of the airstrip's private operator. The underlying reason was economic, driven by urban expansion and the increasing real estate value of the land. The site was more valuable for development than for aviation purposes.
The site of the former airstrip has been completely redeveloped into an urban lotissement (a planned housing or commercial development). The grass runway has been erased and replaced by a grid of new streets and subdivided plots, which are being integrated into the city's urban area. The land is now used for residential and/or commercial construction.
Lorenzon Airstrip was a private airfield that served the general aviation community of Garibaldi and the surrounding Serra GaĂşcha region. It was primarily used for recreational flying, flight instruction, and private transport by small, single-engine aircraft. It supported the activities of the local Aeroclube de Garibaldi, providing essential infrastructure for pilots and aviation enthusiasts in the area before regional air travel became more concentrated at larger airports like Hugo Cantergiani Airport (SBCX) in Caxias do Sul.
There are zero prospects for reopening the Lorenzon Airstrip. The physical infrastructure has been permanently dismantled and the land has been irrevocably repurposed for urban development, making a return to aviation activities at this location impossible.
