Circa August 2009. The definitive decision to close and sell the airport land was formalized by Municipal Law Nº 1.932, dated August 24, 2009, which authorized the city to sell the property. Construction on the new development began in late 2010.
Urban redevelopment and economic reasons. The municipal government of Prata sold the airport land to a private developer for the construction of a residential housing project. This is a common occurrence for small, centrally-located municipal airports in growing cities, where the real estate value of the land outweighs its aviation utility.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is now a residential neighborhood called 'Residencial Morada do Sol'. The former runway and airport grounds have been replaced by houses and streets. The main avenue of the new neighborhood is named 'Avenida Santos Dumont', a common tribute to aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont and a nod to the site's previous use.
Prata Airport, known locally as 'Campo de Pouso de Prata', was the municipal airfield. It did not handle scheduled commercial passenger flights. Its primary role was to support the region's strong agribusiness sector by serving agricultural aviation (crop dusters) and general aviation. It also facilitated air taxi services and private flights, providing vital air connectivity for local businesses and residents in the Triângulo Mineiro region of Minas Gerais.
None. There are zero prospects for reopening the airport at its original location, as the land is now a fully developed and occupied residential area. There are no known public plans or active projects to construct a new municipal airport for Prata at a different location.
