Costa dos Corais - Maragogi Airport (under construction)

Not applicable as the airport never commenced operations. The project has been characterized by prolonged periods of stalled construction rather than a closure. The primary reasons for the delays and its non-operational status include bureaucratic hurdles, inconsistent funding, and logistical challenges, which were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The site is an incomplete airport construction zone. As of early 2024, the 2,200-meter runway is paved and largely complete. However, essential infrastructure, including the passenger terminal, control tower, taxiways, and aircraft apron, remains under construction or has yet to be finished. The site is not used for any aviation activities and is inaccessible to the public.

The airport has no operational history or historical significance as an active airfield. Its importance is entirely prospective. The project was launched by the government of the state of Alagoas to create a major tourism hub for the 'Costa dos Corais' (Coral Coast), one of Brazil's most popular beach destinations. Currently, tourists visiting Maragogi must fly into Maceió (MCZ) or Recife (REC), both of which are approximately a two-hour drive away. The airport is designed to handle commercial jets like the Boeing 737-800, with the goal of providing direct air access, drastically reducing travel time, and stimulating economic development in the region.

There are strong and active plans to complete and open the airport, not reopen it. The state and federal governments have reaffirmed their commitment to the project. In late 2023, the government of Alagoas announced the resumption of the final construction phase, with new federal funding allocated for the completion of the passenger terminal and other necessary facilities. Officials have expressed optimism about inaugurating the airport to boost tourism for the high season, although official opening dates have been repeatedly postponed. The prospect for its eventual opening is high, but the timeline remains subject to the pace of construction and regulatory certification by Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC).
