Mombaça North Airport

While there is no official documented reason, the closure is almost certainly due to economic factors and redundancy. The municipality is served by the primary, paved Mombaça Airport (ICAO: SNMB), located southeast of the city. The existence of this superior, publicly recognized facility would have rendered the rudimentary, unpaved Mombaça North airstrip obsolete for general aviation and any other potential users.

The site is an abandoned airstrip. Recent satellite imagery shows the faint outline of the runway, but it is heavily overgrown with vegetation and crossed by dirt tracks. The surface is unmaintained and completely unsuitable for any aviation activity. There are no buildings, hangars, or any other infrastructure remaining at the site. It is effectively vacant, undeveloped land.

Mombaça North Airport was a small, non-commercial airstrip. It consisted of a single, unpaved dirt/grass runway. Its operations were limited to general aviation, likely serving private aircraft for local landowners (fazendas), agricultural purposes (crop dusting), or as a basic landing strip before the main airport (SNMB) became fully operational or preferred. It held no major historical significance and never handled scheduled passenger or cargo flights.

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Mombaça North Airport (BR-1447). Any municipal or state investment in aviation infrastructure for the region would be directed towards the maintenance and potential improvement of the main Mombaça Airport (SNMB). The reopening of this small, defunct northern strip is considered highly improbable.
