Approximately mid-2020. The airport was decommissioned and permanently closed concurrently with the inauguration and operational start of the new Nova Mutum Municipal Airport (ICAO: SWNU) in June/July 2020.
Urban development and replacement. The airport was a simple airstrip located in an area that became central to the rapidly expanding city of Nova Mutum. Its location in the middle of the urban grid hindered city growth and posed an increasing safety risk to the surrounding population. It was officially closed and replaced by the new, larger, and more modern Aeroporto Municipal Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes (ICAO: SWNU), which was constructed further from the city center to accommodate larger aircraft and meet modern safety standards.
The site has been completely redeveloped and integrated into the urban landscape of Nova Mutum. The former runway and airport grounds are now occupied by city streets (such as a portion of Avenida dos Uirapurus), residential and commercial buildings, and a large public park and lake complex named 'Lago do Semeador'. No physical trace of the operational airport remains.
The airport, known locally as the 'campo de aviação' or 'pista antiga' (old runway), was a fundamental piece of infrastructure during the early development and colonization of Nova Mutum. It primarily served general aviation, air taxis, and agricultural aircraft, which are vital for the region's dominant agribusiness sector. It provided essential air connectivity for pioneers, business travel, and medical emergencies, playing a crucial role in the city's initial growth. It did not handle scheduled commercial airline services.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening this airport. The land has been permanently and completely repurposed for urban use. All aviation services and future development efforts are focused on the new municipal airport (ICAO: SWNU), which is fully operational and designed for future expansion.
