The airport was officially de-registered and its registration cancelled on January 17, 2013. This action was formalized by Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) through Ordinance NÂş 123/SIA.
The official reason for the closure was 'ExcluĂdo a Pedido', which translates to 'Deleted/Excluded by Request'. This means the private owner of the airstrip formally requested that ANAC remove it from the official registry. The specific motivations for the owner's request are not public, but such decisions are typically driven by economic factors, such as the high cost of maintenance, insurance, and regulatory compliance, or a change in the farm's operational model that rendered an airstrip unnecessary.
The site is currently an abandoned airstrip. Recent satellite imagery shows the dirt runway is still clearly visible but is no longer maintained. Vegetation is encroaching on the runway surface, and it is not suitable for aviation use. The surrounding land remains active farmland, and the former airstrip is now just a feature of the agricultural landscape.
Fazenda Maravilha Airport, whose official ICAO identifier was SJXM (the code BR-0963 is an unofficial identifier used in some non-governmental databases), was a private airstrip. Its sole purpose was to serve the logistical needs of the large farm ('fazenda') on which it was located. Operations were limited to private, general aviation aircraft, likely small single-engine planes (e.g., Cessna 206/210, Piper Seneca). These aircraft were used to transport the farm's owners, managers, and workers, as well as to fly in urgent supplies, mail, and spare parts for agricultural machinery, providing a crucial transportation link in a remote rural area.
There are no known or publicly announced plans to reopen Fazenda Maravilha Airport. Since it was a private facility closed at the owner's request, any initiative to reopen would have to be undertaken by the current landowner. This would require a significant investment to refurbish the runway and facilities, as well as a completely new and rigorous application and certification process with ANAC. Given that it has been closed for over a decade, the prospect of it reopening is considered extremely low.
