Approximately mid-to-late 1990s. Official records are scarce, but local news reports from 2018 state the airport had been deactivated for 'more than 20 years'.
Urban encroachment and land redevelopment. The city of Jussara expanded around the airport, making its operation increasingly impractical and unsafe. The land was subsequently decommissioned, subdivided into lots, and sold for residential development, officially becoming a new neighborhood.
The site is now a residential neighborhood named 'Setor Aeroporto' (Airport Sector), a common naming convention in Brazil for areas built on former airfields. The land has been completely re-purposed with streets, houses, and other urban infrastructure. While a faint outline of the former dirt runway can still be seen on satellite imagery, it is no longer functional and is crossed by public roads. There are no remaining aviation facilities like hangars or a terminal.
The airport was a vital piece of infrastructure for the development of Jussara and the surrounding agricultural region in Goiás. When active, it primarily handled general aviation traffic, including private aircraft for ranchers and business owners, air taxi services, and likely medical evacuation flights. It provided a crucial connection to larger urban centers like Goiânia before the local road network was as developed as it is today, supporting the growth of local agribusiness and commerce.
There are zero prospects for reopening the original airport due to the extensive residential development on the site. However, there are long-standing plans to build a *new* municipal airport for Jussara at a different location. As of early 2023, the municipal government of Jussara was in active discussions with the Goiás state government to advance the project for the construction of a new airfield to serve the region's economic needs.
