Approximately mid-2016. The airstrip was rendered obsolete and officially deactivated upon the inauguration of the new, modern Abunã Airport (ICAO: SBAB) in May 2016, which replaced it.
The primary reason for closure was its replacement by a new, superior facility. The old Abunã Airstrip (BR-0295) was an unpaved, rudimentary runway with minimal infrastructure. Its location within the urban perimeter of the Abunã district posed significant safety risks to both aircraft operations and the local population. The new airport was constructed outside the town to meet modern safety standards, allow for larger aircraft, and provide better infrastructure as part of a federal program to improve regional aviation in the Amazon.
The site of the former airstrip is completely defunct and abandoned for aviation purposes. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows a clearly visible but overgrown and unmaintained runway strip. The land appears to be partially used as an informal local road or path by the community. There is no remaining aviation infrastructure, and the area is slowly being reclaimed by vegetation and informal urban expansion.
For decades, the Abunã Airstrip was a critical transportation link for the remote district of Abunã, located on the border of Rondônia and Acre states. It primarily served small general aviation aircraft and air taxis. Its main operations included transporting residents, essential goods, medical supplies, and mail to and from the state capital, Porto Velho, and other regional centers. It was a vital lifeline, especially during rainy seasons when unpaved roads like the BR-364 highway became impassable. The airstrip supported local commerce, government agency access (like health and indigenous services), and was the main point of entry and exit for this isolated Amazonian community before significant road improvements were made.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the Abunã Airstrip (BR-0295). It has been permanently and officially replaced by the new Abunã Airport (SBAB), which fully serves the region's aviation needs. The old site is considered obsolete, unsafe by modern standards, and its land is more valuable for other community uses.
