Estimated between 2008 and 2012. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows a clear, usable dirt runway in 2005, which appears increasingly unmaintained by 2010 and is completely absorbed by surrounding agricultural fields by 2014.
The airport was a private airstrip located on a farm ('fazenda'). Its closure was due to a change in land use for economic reasons. The land was converted from an airstrip to agricultural production (likely sugarcane), indicating that farming the land was considered more valuable than maintaining the aviation facility. This is a common fate for private farm strips in Brazil when they are no longer needed or economically viable.
The site has been fully reclaimed for agriculture. Recent satellite imagery shows the exact location of the former runway is now an active crop field, seamlessly integrated with the surrounding farmland. There are no visible remnants of any airport infrastructure, such as a runway surface, markings, or buildings.
Fazenda Barra do Traitu Airport was a private airstrip with no significant public or historical role. Its purpose was purely functional and localized, serving the agricultural and transportation needs of the farm on which it was built. When active, operations would have been limited to general aviation, likely including small aircraft for the farm owner's personal/business travel and agricultural aircraft (avião agrícola) for crop dusting and spraying over the vast plantations in the region.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening this airport. Given that it was a private facility and the land has been completely converted to valuable agricultural use, its reactivation is extremely unlikely. There is no public or commercial incentive to rebuild an airport at this location.
