Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

The airport was permanently closed around mid-2012. Its closure coincided with the official inauguration of the new Cametá Airport (ICAO: SNTD) on July 5, 2012, which replaced this facility.

Reason for Closure

The primary reason for closure was its replacement by a new, modern airport. The old airport (BR-0030, also known by the unofficial ICAO code SNCK) was located within the urban area of Cametá, which limited its potential for expansion and posed safety concerns as the city grew around it. Its infrastructure was outdated, featuring a short, likely unpaved runway unsuitable for modern aircraft. The new airport was built at a more suitable location with a paved runway and better facilities to improve safety and accommodate larger aircraft, thereby enhancing the region's connectivity.

Current Status

The site of the former Cametá Airport has been completely redeveloped and integrated into the city's urban fabric. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows that the area where the runway once existed is now occupied by streets, residential housing, and other urban developments. There are no physical remnants of the airport visible today; it has been entirely repurposed for city expansion.

Historical Significance

As the original airfield for Cametá, it served as a critical transportation hub in a region of the Amazon where land and river travel can be challenging. It primarily supported general aviation, air taxi operations, and crucial services like medical evacuations (MEDEVAC). The airport connected Cametá with regional towns and the state capital, Belém, facilitating the movement of people, mail, and essential supplies. Operations were limited to small, propeller-driven aircraft capable of using a short, rudimentary runway. It was essential for the economic and social development of the municipality for decades before it was decommissioned.

Reopening Prospects

There are no plans or prospects for reopening this airport. The site has been permanently and irreversibly converted to urban use. All aviation activities for Cametá were officially and permanently transferred to the new Cametá Airport (ICAO: SNTD), which is located approximately 7 kilometers northeast of the old site and is fully operational.
