Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2005-2006. The closure was not a single event but a gradual process coinciding with the construction and inauguration of the new Tucumã Airport (ICAO: SBTU).

Reason for Closure

Replacement by a superior facility. The original airport (BR-0015) was a basic, unpaved dirt airstrip. As the city of Tucumã grew, the airport became surrounded by urban development, creating significant safety risks. Furthermore, its rudimentary nature limited the size and type of aircraft it could handle. A new, modern airport (SBTU) was constructed further from the city center with a paved runway to support the region's economic growth, accommodate larger aircraft, and meet higher safety standards, rendering BR-0015 obsolete.

Current Status

The site is abandoned and has been partially reclaimed by nature and urban sprawl. Satellite imagery shows the faint outline of the former runway, which is now heavily overgrown with grass and shrubs. The southern end of the property has been encroached upon by the city, with streets and residential buildings constructed directly over the former runway area. The site is not maintained and serves no official purpose.

Historical Significance

This airport was a quintessential pioneer airstrip, fundamentally linked to the founding of Tucumã in the early 1980s. The region was the site of a major gold rush, and this airstrip served as a critical lifeline. It primarily handled general aviation, supporting small single-engine aircraft (like Cessna models) operated by gold prospectors ('garimpeiros'), air taxi services, and businesses transporting people, equipment, and supplies to and from the remote Amazonian location. It was instrumental in the initial settlement and economic boom of the city.

Reopening Prospects

There are no prospects for reopening this airport. The city of Tucumã is now served by the modern and fully operational Tucumã Airport (IATA: TUX, ICAO: SBTU), which has recently undergone significant upgrades to handle commercial flights. The location of the old airport (BR-0015) within the city limits and the urban development on the site make its reactivation as an aviation facility both unsafe and impractical.
