Senhor Do Bonfim

The airport was closed due to urban encroachment and related safety concerns. Over the decades, the city of Senhor do Bonfim grew and completely surrounded the airfield. Its central location became a significant safety hazard for both aircraft operations and the local population, while also constraining further urban development. To resolve this, a new, more modern airport (Aeroporto João Durval Carneiro - ICAO: SNBF) was constructed in a safer location outside the city center, leading to the decommissioning of this original site.

The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and integrated into the urban fabric of Senhor do Bonfim. The original runway and airport facilities no longer exist. The land is now occupied by residential and commercial buildings, streets (including the aptly named 'Avenida do Aeroporto' which follows part of the old runway's path), and public spaces like the 'Praça da Bíblia'. The area is now a bustling part of the city.

This airfield was the original and primary air transport facility for Senhor do Bonfim and the surrounding region for many years. It was crucial for connecting this interior part of the state of Bahia, handling general aviation, air taxi services, medical flights, and possibly small regional commercial aircraft. It played a vital role in the economic and social development of the city before modern road infrastructure was fully established. The ICAO code 'BR-0010' is a non-standard identifier, likely used in unofficial databases or flight simulators to denote this specific closed airfield, which predates the current standardized system or was too small to have a formal ICAO code in its later years.

There are zero prospects for reopening an airport at this location. The site has been irreversibly converted to urban use. The air transportation needs of Senhor do Bonfim are served by the newer Aeroporto João Durval Carneiro (ICAO: SNBF), which is located approximately 7 kilometers northeast of the city center and replaced this closed airfield.
