Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Late 1990s. The airport was phased out and permanently closed following the construction and inauguration of the new Cabo Frio International Airport (ICAO: SBCB), which began its operations around 1998 and was officially opened in 2001.

Reason for Closure

The airport was strategically replaced. Its closure was due to significant operational limitations, including a short runway that could not accommodate larger aircraft, and increasing urban encroachment as the city of Cabo Frio grew around it. The new airport was built to handle the region's burgeoning tourism and cargo traffic, offering a much longer runway and modern facilities capable of receiving large international jets.

Current Status

The airport site has been completely decommissioned and fully redeveloped. The land where the runway, taxiways, and terminal once stood is now the densely populated residential and commercial neighborhood of Braga. There are no visible remnants of the airport infrastructure; the area has been entirely urbanized with streets, houses, apartment buildings, and local businesses.

Historical Significance

This was the original airport for Cabo Frio and the surrounding 'Região dos Lagos' (Lakes Region). It was instrumental in the initial development of the area as a major tourist destination in Brazil. The airport primarily handled general aviation and regional commercial flights, with airlines like Rio-Sul Serviços Aéreos Regionais operating smaller turboprop aircraft (e.g., Embraer EMB 110 Bandeirante) that connected Cabo Frio to cities like Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Its location on the edge of the Araruama Lagoon was scenic but ultimately restrictive for expansion.

Reopening Prospects

Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been irreversibly redeveloped into a city neighborhood, and the region is now well-served by the modern and far more capable Cabo Frio International Airport (SBCB), located a few kilometers away.
