Approximately 1975. The airport was officially deactivated and closed following the construction and inauguration of the new Alegrete Novo Airport (IATA: ALQ, ICAO: SSAL), which took over all air operations for the city.
The primary reason for closure was urban encroachment. The airport was located very close to the city center, and as Alegrete expanded, the airport's operations became a safety concern for the surrounding residential areas. Furthermore, its location prevented any potential expansion of the runway or facilities to accommodate larger, more modern aircraft. It was replaced by a new, larger airport built at a safer distance from the city.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now fully integrated into the city's urban landscape. The area where the runway and terminal once stood is now a residential and commercial neighborhood. Streets, such as Avenida TiarajĂş, follow the path of the old runway. There are no physical remnants of the airport infrastructure remaining. The land is occupied by houses, businesses, and public spaces.
This was the original airport for Alegrete and served as the primary air link for the region for several decades. It handled regional commercial flights, connecting Alegrete to the state capital, Porto Alegre, and other cities. Airlines such as VARIG and SAVAG operated flights from this airport, typically using propeller aircraft like the Douglas DC-3. It was a crucial piece of infrastructure for the local economy, mail transport, and passenger travel before it was decommissioned.
There are zero prospects for reopening this airport. The site has been permanently and irreversibly converted to urban use for nearly 50 years. All current and future aviation plans for the city of Alegrete are focused on the operational Alegrete Novo Airport (SSAL).
