Qaarsut Airport (IATA: JQA, ICAO: BGUQ) is the primary air gateway to the town of Uummannaq and its surrounding communities in northwestern Greenland. Functioning as a critical piece of regional infrastructure, the airport provides a vital year-round connection for residents, cargo, and tourism, linking this remote area to Greenland’s main air travel network. Its operation is essential for overcoming the geographical isolation imposed by the region's fjords and seasonal sea ice.

Opened on 29 September 1999, the airport was constructed as part of a broader government initiative to enhance air transportation throughout Greenland. The airport is located on the Nuussuaq Peninsula, approximately 21 kilometers northwest of the town of Uummannaq, which sits on a separate island in the fjord. Due to this separation, travelers do not reach the town directly from the airport. The final leg of the journey is a mandatory and scenic helicopter transfer operated by Air Greenland. This short flight across the Uummannaq Fjord to the Uummannaq Heliport is an integral part of the travel experience and is typically included in the flight ticket to JQA.

All scheduled flights at Qaarsut Airport are domestic and are operated exclusively by Air Greenland. The airport is served by Dash-8 fixed-wing aircraft connecting to larger hubs, most notably Ilulissat, from where further connections to the rest of Greenland and international destinations are available. Passenger volume is modest, primarily consisting of local residents, essential service workers, and a small number of tourists.

Reflecting its role as a functional transit point, the airport's facilities are basic. The single, small terminal building contains a check-in desk, a simple waiting area, and restroom facilities. There are no restaurants, shops, or passenger lounges. The focus is entirely on facilitating the efficient transfer of passengers and baggage between fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.

For travelers, it is essential to book flights directly to Uummannaq (JQA), as this booking will automatically include the helicopter transfer from Qaarsut. Passengers should arrive at least 60 minutes before their scheduled departure.
