Isperih Airfield

The closure was due to economic reasons. Isperih Airfield was an agricultural airport operated by the state. After the fall of the People's Republic of Bulgaria in 1989, the country's system of large, collectivized farms was dismantled, and the state-run agricultural aviation services collapsed. With the privatization of land and the shift to a market economy, the demand for such large-scale aerial application services disappeared, rendering the airfield economically unviable.

The airfield is completely abandoned and in a state of disrepair. Satellite imagery shows a single asphalt runway that is heavily cracked, weathered, and overgrown with grass and weeds. The associated buildings, likely former hangars and administrative offices, are derelict. The site is not used for aviation and appears to be informally used by local farmers for access or temporary storage, with nature slowly reclaiming the man-made structures.

During its operational years, Isperih Airfield was a vital component of Bulgaria's agricultural infrastructure. It primarily served as a base for agricultural aircraft (like the Antonov An-2) performing crop dusting, fertilization, and pest control over the vast farmlands of the Ludogorie region. It was part of a nationwide network of similar airfields that were crucial for supporting the country's planned agricultural economy under the socialist government.

There are no known plans or credible prospects for reopening Isperih Airfield. The infrastructure would require a complete and costly reconstruction. Given the lack of commercial or general aviation demand in the immediate area and the proximity to other functioning airports, its reactivation is considered highly improbable. The trend for such disused airfields in Bulgaria is repurposing for other uses like solar farms or returning the land to full agricultural use.
