Early 1990s
Economic reasons. The airfield was part of the state-owned 'Agricultural Aviation' (Селскостопанска авиация) enterprise. This enterprise became economically unviable and was ultimately liquidated following the collapse of the socialist regime in Bulgaria in 1989. The transition to a market economy and the de-collectivization of farmland eliminated the demand for a large-scale, state-run aerial application service, leading to the abandonment of its extensive network of airfields, including Dolna Dikanya.
The airfield is closed and in a state of abandonment. The single asphalt runway, while still clearly defined, is severely degraded with numerous cracks, potholes, and significant vegetation growth. The associated infrastructure, such as hangars and administrative buildings, are derelict and decaying. The site is known to be used unofficially for non-aviation activities, including amateur motorsports, illegal drag racing, driver training, and drone flying. Critically, a large photovoltaic power plant (solar farm) has been constructed on the land immediately south and east of the runway, effectively rendering the site unusable for any future aviation due to obstacle clearance requirements.
Dolna Dikanya was a utility airfield primarily used for agricultural aviation during the socialist era of the People's Republic of Bulgaria. It was a key component of a nationwide network of similar airfields supporting the country's collectivized agriculture. Operations mainly consisted of crop dusting, aerial fertilization, and pest control for the large state-run farms in the Radomir region. The fleet typically consisted of robust aircraft suited for such tasks, most notably the Antonov An-2 biplane, and potentially other utility aircraft like the Zlin Z-37 Čmelák.
There are no known official plans or credible prospects for reopening Dolna Dikanya Airfield. The combination of its advanced state of disrepair, the high cost of potential renovation, a lack of clear economic demand for a small airfield in this specific location, and the permanent obstruction presented by the adjacent solar farm make its reactivation for aviation purposes virtually impossible.
