Approximately early 1990s.
Economic reasons. The airfield was part of a large network of agricultural airfields operated by the state-owned enterprise 'Agricultural Aviation' (Селскостопанска авиация) during Bulgaria's socialist era. Following the political and economic transition after 1989, this state-sponsored system was dismantled. The centrally planned agricultural model that required extensive aerial support collapsed, making small, specialized airfields like Todorovo financially unsustainable and leading to their abandonment.
The site is completely abandoned and in a state of decay. The single paved runway is still visible but is severely cracked, weathered, and overgrown with grass and weeds, making it unusable for any aviation purposes. There are no remaining hangars, terminal buildings, or other infrastructure on the site. The land is derelict, and the surrounding area is used for agriculture.
Todorovo Airfield's significance was primarily functional and local, serving as a vital base for agricultural aviation. During its active years, it handled operations crucial for the region's large-scale collective farms. The main aircraft used were workhorses like the Antonov An-2, which conducted crop dusting, aerial application of fertilizers and pesticides, and other aerial work. It was an integral part of the industrialized agricultural infrastructure in the Ludogorie region of northeastern Bulgaria before 1989.
There are no known or publicly discussed plans to reopen or redevelop Todorovo Airfield. The significant investment required to restore the runway and the lack of a viable economic or logistical need for an airfield in this specific rural location make any prospect of reopening extremely unlikely.
