Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Early 1990s. The exact date is not publicly documented, but its closure aligns with the period of economic transition in Bulgaria following the fall of the socialist regime in 1989.

Reason for Closure

Primarily economic, resulting from political changes. The airfield was a base for the state-owned 'Agricultural Aviation' (Селскостопанска авиация - ССА). This entire sector was dismantled during Bulgaria's transition to a market economy, as collectivized farming ceased and the state-subsidized service became financially unsustainable. This led to the abandonment of its extensive network of airfields, including Voditsa.

Current Status

The site has been completely repurposed and is no longer recognizable as an airfield. The entire area, including the former runway, taxiways, and aprons, is now covered by a large-scale photovoltaic power plant (solar park). The original aviation infrastructure has been entirely removed to accommodate the solar panel arrays.

Historical Significance

During its operational years, Voditsa Airfield was a vital component of Bulgaria's agricultural infrastructure. Its primary role was to support the large-scale, collectivized farms in the Varna region. Operations consisted almost exclusively of agricultural flights for crop dusting, fertilization, and pest control. The workhorse aircraft for these tasks was the rugged and versatile Antonov An-2. The airfield was part of a nationwide system of similar bases that were crucial for the agricultural productivity of the country during the socialist era.

Reopening Prospects

There are no prospects for reopening the site as an airport. The land has been permanently redeveloped for industrial-scale renewable energy generation, making any return to aviation use impossible.
