Likely ceased operations in the early 1990s. A specific, formal closure date is not documented, as the airfield fell into disuse gradually.
Economic reasons. The airfield was part of Bulgaria's state-run agricultural aviation network ('Селскостопанска авиация'). This system collapsed following the political and economic changes after 1989, which led to the dismantling of collective farms and the privatization of the agricultural sector. The demand for large-scale, state-sponsored aerial application (crop dusting, spraying) disappeared, making small, specialized airfields like Sirakovo economically unviable.
The site of the former airfield has been completely repurposed and is now occupied by a large-scale photovoltaic power plant (solar farm). Satellite imagery clearly shows that the runway and any associated aviation infrastructure have been removed and replaced with rows of solar panels. The land is no longer recognizable as an airfield.
Sirakovo Airfield was a utility and agricultural airstrip. Its primary role was to serve the agricultural needs of the surrounding region, particularly the local collective farms during Bulgaria's socialist era. Operations consisted almost exclusively of agricultural flights for crop dusting, fertilization, and pest control. The most common aircraft used for these tasks would have been the Antonov An-2. The airfield had no scheduled passenger services or significant military importance; it was a purely functional part of the country's agricultural infrastructure.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Sirakovo Airfield. The complete conversion of the site into a major solar energy installation makes its return to aviation use virtually impossible. The land has been permanently redeveloped for industrial energy production.
