Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately early 1990s. A precise date is not officially recorded, but its closure coincides with the widespread collapse of the state-run agricultural system following the political changes in Bulgaria in 1989.

Reason for Closure

Economic and political restructuring. The primary reason was the dissolution of the state-owned enterprise 'Селскостопанска авиация' (Agricultural Aviation) after the fall of communism. The transition from large, state-run collective farms to privatized, smaller land holdings eliminated the need for a centralized, government-operated network of crop-dusting airfields, making facilities like Toshevtsi economically unviable and obsolete.

Current Status

The site is completely abandoned and in a state of advanced decay. The asphalt runway is still clearly visible from satellite imagery but is heavily cracked, weathered, and being reclaimed by vegetation. Any associated buildings, such as hangars or administrative offices, are derelict and in ruins. The area is not maintained and serves no official purpose. It is non-operational for any form of aviation.

Historical Significance

The Toshevtsi strip was a functional part of Bulgaria's extensive agricultural aviation network during the socialist era (approx. 1960s-1989). Its sole purpose was to support the large collective farms in the Vidin Province. It served as a base for agricultural aircraft, most notably the Antonov An-2, which performed aerial application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers over vast tracts of farmland. It was a vital piece of local infrastructure for the centrally-planned agricultural economy of the time.

Reopening Prospects

None. There are no known or credible plans to reopen or redevelop the airstrip. The economic model that supported its existence is gone. The cost to clear the land, rebuild the runway, and construct new facilities would be substantial, with no modern agricultural or commercial demand to justify the investment in this specific location.
