Early 1990s
The closure was primarily for economic reasons, directly linked to the political changes in Bulgaria after 1989. The airstrip was part of a nationwide network supporting state-run agricultural aviation. With the fall of the socialist government, the large, state-owned collective farms (TKZS) were dismantled and the land was privatized. This eliminated the business model for large-scale, state-managed crop-dusting operations, rendering hundreds of such specialized airstrips, including Brest, obsolete and economically unviable.
The site is abandoned and in a state of dereliction. The single paved runway is still clearly visible from satellite imagery but is heavily weathered, cracked, and overgrown with grass and weeds, making it unusable for aviation. There are no significant buildings, hangars, or support infrastructure remaining on the site. The land is unused for any official purpose and is slowly being reclaimed by nature, surrounded by active agricultural fields.
Brest Airstrip was a purpose-built agricultural airfield constructed during Bulgaria's socialist era. Its primary function was to support the intensive agriculture of the fertile Danubian Plain in the Pleven Province. It served as a base for agricultural aircraft, most notably the Antonov An-2 and Zlin Z-37 Čmelák. These planes were used for crop dusting, aerial seeding, and the application of fertilizers and pesticides over the vast, collectivized farms in the region. The airstrip was a critical component of the centrally planned agricultural economy of the time but had no scheduled passenger services or significant military role.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Brest Airstrip. The original economic purpose for the airfield no longer exists. The cost to resurface the runway and build the necessary modern infrastructure would be substantial, with no clear commercial or private demand to justify such an investment. The airstrip is not included in any national or regional transport development strategies.
