Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately the early 1990s. While an exact date is not documented, the airstrip ceased operations following the major political and economic shifts in Bulgaria after 1989.

Reason for Closure

Economic and systemic changes. The airstrip was part of a vast, state-run network supporting socialist-era collective farms. Its closure was a direct result of the collapse of this system in the early 1990s. The transition to a market economy, the privatization of land, and the dissolution of large collective farms (TKZS) eliminated the need for the state-sponsored, large-scale agricultural aviation operations that this strip was built for.

Current Status

The site is completely abandoned and has been fully reclaimed for agricultural purposes. The former grass/dirt runway is no longer distinguishable from the surrounding cultivated fields, although a very faint outline can sometimes be discerned on satellite imagery. There is no remaining infrastructure such as hangars, buildings, or markings. The land is actively farmed.

Historical Significance

Getsovo Cropduster Strip was a vital piece of local agricultural infrastructure during Bulgaria's socialist period. As a 'Selskostopansko Letishte' (agricultural airfield), its primary function was to support aerial application services for the surrounding farmland. Operations were typically conducted using rugged utility aircraft, most notably the Antonov An-2, for tasks such as crop dusting, seeding, and fertilization. It was one of hundreds of similar unpaved strips across the country that formed the backbone of the state's highly centralized agricultural industry.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Getsovo airstrip. The original purpose for its existence is obsolete, and the land has been fully integrated back into private agricultural use. It is considered permanently closed.
