Early 1990s
Economic reasons following the end of the communist era in Bulgaria. The airfield was part of a state-run agricultural aviation network that was dismantled after 1989 due to the collapse of the country's collective farming system and the subsequent lack of funding and demand for such services.
The airport is abandoned and in a state of complete disrepair. Satellite imagery shows the paved runway is still visible but is severely cracked, overgrown with vegetation, and unusable for any aviation purposes. The associated buildings are derelict or have been demolished. A large photovoltaic (solar) power plant has been constructed on the land encompassing and adjacent to the former airfield, making any future aviation use impossible.
Madrets Airport was a key functional component of Bulgaria's extensive agricultural aviation network during the socialist period (approx. 1960s-1989). Its primary purpose was to support the large-scale collective farms in the region. Operations consisted almost exclusively of agricultural flights, including crop dusting, aerial fertilization, and pest control. The most common aircraft used for these tasks was the Antonov An-2. The airport had no scheduled passenger services or significant military role. The ICAO code 'BG-0113' is an unofficial identifier, likely assigned by flight simulator communities or unofficial databases, as official Bulgarian ICAO codes begin with 'LB'.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the airport. Its derelict condition, the lack of any economic or logistical need for an airstrip in this specific location, and the current use of the land as a solar farm preclude any possibility of its revival as an aviation facility.
