Early 1990s
Economic reasons. Opan Airport was an agricultural airfield that became obsolete and economically unviable following the collapse of the socialist economic system in Bulgaria after 1989. The state-run agricultural aviation enterprise, which operated a vast network of such airfields, was dismantled. This led to the widespread abandonment of these specialized facilities across the country as the collective farming system they served was dissolved.
The site is completely abandoned and derelict. Satellite imagery clearly shows the outline of a single, unpaved runway which is now heavily overgrown with grass and shrubs, making it unusable. There are no significant buildings, hangars, or infrastructure remaining on the site. The land has reverted to being an empty field and is not used for any formal purpose.
The airport was a functional part of Bulgaria's extensive agricultural aviation network during the socialist era (approx. 1960s-1989). Its sole purpose was to support the large, state-run agricultural cooperatives (TKZS) in the fertile Stara Zagora region. Operations consisted exclusively of agricultural flights, such as crop dusting, seeding, and pest control. The primary aircraft used was the rugged and versatile Antonov An-2. The airport held no significance for passenger, commercial cargo, or military aviation and was purely a local, utilitarian airstrip.
There are no known or publicly discussed plans to reopen or redevelop the Opan Airport. The economic model that supported its existence is gone, and there is no modern demand for an airfield at this specific location, especially given the proximity to the larger, international Stara Zagora Airport (LBSZ) approximately 20 km to the north.
