Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately early 1990s. A precise date is not publicly documented, but its closure coincides with the widespread abandonment of similar airfields after the political and economic changes in Bulgaria in 1989.

Reason for Closure

Primarily economic reasons. The airfield was a state-operated agricultural aviation base. Following the end of the socialist era and the subsequent dissolution of the collective farming system in Bulgaria, the state-sponsored agricultural aviation enterprise that used these fields became defunct. There was no longer an economic or logistical need for a dense network of such specialized airfields, leading to their abandonment.

Current Status

The airfield is completely abandoned and non-operational. A large photovoltaic power plant (solar farm) has been constructed directly on top of the former runway and adjacent areas. Satellite imagery shows the remaining sections of the paved runway are in a state of disrepair, with significant cracking and vegetation growth. The site has been permanently repurposed for renewable energy generation.

Historical Significance

Devene Airfield was a typical 'selsko-stopansko letishte' (селскостопанско летище), or agricultural airfield, active during the People's Republic of Bulgaria. Its primary function was to support the intensive, collectivized agriculture in the Vratsa region. Operations almost exclusively involved agricultural aviation, such as crop dusting, aerial fertilization, and pest control. The main aircraft type used for these tasks was the rugged and versatile Antonov An-2. The airfield was part of a crucial state infrastructure that supported the country's agricultural output during that period.

Reopening Prospects

Zero. The construction of a large, permanent solar power installation on the critical operational surfaces (the runway) makes any future use as an airfield impossible. There are no known plans or discussions regarding its reopening, as the land has been fundamentally repurposed.
