Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Early 1990s. An exact date is not officially recorded, but its closure is directly linked to the period of economic and political transition in Bulgaria following the fall of the socialist regime in 1989.

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons. The airport was a state-operated agricultural airfield. Its closure was a direct result of the collapse of the centralized, state-subsidized agricultural system and the subsequent dissolution of the national agricultural aviation service ('Selkostopanska Aviatsiya'). The new economic model of private land ownership and smaller farms made such dedicated airfields obsolete and financially unsustainable.

Current Status

The airport is completely defunct and the land has been fully reclaimed for agricultural purposes. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows that the former grass/dirt runway is no longer distinct from the surrounding cultivated fields. All associated aviation infrastructure, such as hangars or service buildings, has been removed. The site is now indistinguishable from the adjacent farmland.

Historical Significance

During its operational years in the socialist era, Vetovo Airport was a vital component of local agricultural infrastructure. It was part of an extensive national network of similar airfields used for large-scale aerial applications. Operations primarily involved crop dusting aircraft, such as the Antonov An-2 and the Zlín Z-37 Čmelák, which were used to apply fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides over the vast state-run collective farms in the region. Its significance was purely functional and crucial for the industrialized agricultural model of the time.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans, discussions, or prospects for reopening Vetovo Airport. The original purpose for its existence is gone, the land has been repurposed, and there is no apparent economic or logistical demand for an airfield in this specific location. Re-establishment would require acquiring private farmland and a complete reconstruction of all facilities, which is considered highly improbable.
