Early 1990s
The airstrip was closed for economic reasons following the political and economic changes in Bulgaria after 1989. Its primary function was tied to the state-run agricultural aviation enterprise. With the collapse of the socialist system, the large collective farms (TKZS) were dismantled, and the centralized agricultural aviation model became economically unviable. The demand for large-scale aerial crop-dusting plummeted, leading to the abandonment of Bregovo and dozens of similar airstrips across the country.
The site is abandoned and in a state of disuse for aviation purposes. Satellite imagery shows a single, paved runway that is still clearly visible but degraded, with cracks and vegetation growth. The airstrip and surrounding concrete aprons are often used by local farmers for temporary storage of agricultural products, such as hay bales, or for parking farm equipment. The land has effectively reverted to agricultural use, and there are no remaining operational facilities, hangars, or air traffic services.
Bregovo Airstrip was built during the socialist era in Bulgaria as part of a vast network of agricultural airfields. Its main purpose was to support the intensive, collectivized agriculture in the region. Operations were primarily handled by the state-owned 'Agricultural Aviation' (Селскостопанска авиация) operator. The fleet typically consisted of rugged utility aircraft, most notably the Antonov An-2, which were used for crop dusting, aerial seeding, and pest control over the large farm blocks. While not a primary military base, its location near the border with former Yugoslavia and Romania likely gave it some secondary strategic value, but its day-to-day operations were almost exclusively civil and agricultural.
There are no known official plans or credible prospects for reopening the Bregovo Airstrip for aviation. The infrastructure would require a complete and costly overhaul to meet modern safety standards. Given the small population of the Bregovo municipality and the lack of a strong economic driver for general or commercial aviation in the immediate area, reopening the airstrip is not considered a priority or a financially viable project.
