Approximately 2012-2014. Satellite imagery shows the runway was still clear in 2011, but by 2015, construction of large industrial buildings had begun on the site. The closure coincided with the active development of the 'Economic Zone Sofia - Bozhurishte' which began around 2012.
Economic reasons and land repurposing. The land occupied by the airfield was re-designated for industrial use and developed into a major economic and logistics park due to its strategic location near the capital, Sofia, and major transport corridors.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is now the 'Economic Zone Sofia - Bozhurishte'. The former runway and surrounding airfield area are entirely covered by large, modern industrial facilities, including manufacturing plants, logistics centers, and warehouses for numerous international and local companies. There are no remaining traces of the runway or aviation infrastructure.
The site of Bozhurishte Airport holds immense significance in Bulgarian history, as it was the location of the first airport in the country. The original Bozhurishte Airfield was established in 1912, serving as the cradle of Bulgarian military and civil aviation. It was a base for the country's first air combat unit, an aviation school, and was instrumental during the Balkan Wars and World War I. After the wars, it became Sofia's first international airport, serving airlines like Bunavad. Over time, its functions were transferred to the newly built Vrazhdebna Airport (modern-day Sofia Airport, LBSF). The specific airfield designated as BG-0030 was a more recent, unpaved (grass) runway that operated on these historic grounds. In its final years, it was a small general aviation field used primarily for sport flying, ultralights, flight training, and private light aircraft.
None. The prospect of reopening the airport is zero. The land has been permanently and completely transformed into a high-density industrial park. The extensive construction of large, permanent structures makes any return to aviation use impossible.
